FRANK BRAÑA, HISTORIC ACTOR OF ACTION FILM, DIES IN MADRID AT 77 YEARS OLD.

At dawn this Monday, Francisco Braña Pérez, one of our most emblematic actors in action films and spaghetti-westerns, died in the Madrid hospital of Puerta de Hierro, a victim of pulmonary insufficiency. His legacy includes more than 170 films, including many iconic titles from the 1960s and 1970s. He was active in the world of feature films since his participation in Tiovivo c.1950, by José Luis Garci (2004), but his memory was still very present among moviegoers: this past December he had received a tribute from the Almería Western Festival, just like in 2007 he was the protagonist in the Lugo International Auteur Film Week. Francisco Braña was born in the small Asturian town of Pola de Allande in 1934, as a kid he was going down to the mine, working like most in the bowels of the earth. When he came of age, he wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, who had been admitted as a civil guard, but his wish was truncated when he was declared useless in the army. And when he had made up his mind that his future would be forged as a bank clerk, the unexpected happened. “I had the opportunity to work as a driver for a man from Madrid. There they told us about some tests to work in the cinema, as a stuntman. They asked me if I knew how to ride a horse and I answered yes, although it was not entirely true ...”. He premiered with a small role in Café de chinitas (1960), by Gonzalo Delgrás, but his firm blue gaze would soon become popular. He met Clint Eastwood up close on the occasion of For a Few Dollars More and For a Fistdul of Dollars, films that were shot in Almería in the sixties and that constitute the quintessential spaghetti-western. He also shared a roster with Charlton Heston and William Holden, in addition to, obviously, with the great director of that cinema, Sergio Leone. His face, hard and severe, had been forged in karate and boxing classes. In addition, young Braña made an effort to learn English. In Rey de Reyes, the famous blockbuster about Jesus Christ, he developed his first role as a stuntman. At the end of the sixties and during the following decade, he became a fetish actor for Rafael Romero Marchent, with whom he would shoot Garringo, Manos torpes, Un dólar de recompensa and El lobo negro, among other titles. Silicosis, inherited from his years in the mine, had prevented him from developing his work normally in recent times, but he always kept a fine humor and an active head.
