Eduardo Fajardo, the great actor who 'fell in love' with Almeria, dies

The veteran performer, who had been retired for years, died in Mexico where he had several children

Diario de Almeria
By Mr. Martinez
July 4, 2019

Actor Eduardo Fajardo has died at the age of 94 in Mexico, his second homeland. A few months ago he received a great tribute from the Almeria Western Museum of Cinema Association before leaving for Mexico, precisely where he had several children. In the Aztec country, an actor who created a school and made nearly 200 films has died. Almeria was his home for the last few years, a place he discovered one fine day when he came to shoot an episode of the series Curro Jiménez.

In recent times it was easy to find him in the Plaza de San Sebastián, at the Bar Barea, having a coffee and always talking to friends and reminiscing about the golden years of cinema. The climate and the people of Almeria made him decide to stay in Mojácar one day, although he later moved to Huércal de Almería and finally lived in the capital. Of course, he traveled with some regularity to Mexico where he had part of his family.

Born in Meis in Galicia on August 14, 1924, Eduardo Fajardo moved to live in Haro in La Rioja when he was a few weeks old. As a teenager he did his Baccalaureate in Santander. In 1942 he began his acting career, initially as a voice actor. Fajardo is a very young heartthrob who has a portentous and unique voice for dubbing. That facet in cinema fascinated him, as he always said when he recalled his beginnings.

With Cifesa he made his debut as an actor in 1947 with the film Héroes del 95, appearing in films that did reach a certain prominence such as Locura de amor (1948), Balarrasa (1950) or Alba de América (1951).

In 1953 he moved to Mexico, where he combined cinema with television appearances; among them Tehuantepec by Miguel Contreras Torres (1954), Tizoc: Amor Indio by Ismael Rodríguez Ruelas (1957). On his return to Spain, he resumed his career with a frenetic activity that led him to shoot an average of fifteen titles a year in which villainous roles abound in Spaghetti Westerns, such as The Seventh Cavalry (1965) or Django (1966).

In the last years of his professional activity, he combined film and dubbing with television appearances (La Barraca, 1979; The Joys and the Shadows, 1982; Tristeza de amor, 1986) and theatre, in which she went from acting (Cándida, 1985), to directing, with the project Teatro sin barreras para personas con discapacidad. He has worked in 183 films, 75 plays and some 2,000 television appearances in Spain and Mexico.

In Almeria he has shot thirteen films, all of them within the western genre. The first was Django in 1966 and the last Karl May in 1974, a western for German television. He coincided with Leo Anchoriz, from Almeria, in 1973 during the filming of the film Que nos importa la revolución.

In 1985 he became the protagonist of the Spanish television series Tristeza de amor. Fajardo, already a mature actor but without abdicating his status as a heartthrob, many viewers discovered in him the effective performer of always, in the same way that he also stood out in another television series Los gozos y las sombras in which he was reunited with the land where he was born, reaching a large audience among all audiences. Later, Fajardo replaced his friend and colleague Alfredo Mayo, who died shortly after filming began on Tristeza de Amor.

And Eduardo Fajardo reached retirement age. He always had the idea of living in Almeria when he left his career, he had many reasons to settle there and one of them was its climate and the knowledge of the land experienced throughout the many shootings made there. First in Mojácar and then in Huércal de Almería he lived. He founded the Theatre Without Barriers, which was so successful.

"The name of this extraordinary actor is written in golden letters in the history of cinema, theater and television in Mexico and Spain, in addition to participating in productions in Italy, Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States.

Eduardo was married four times. In Mexico he did it in two, one of them with the actress Carmelita González. From their marriages their children were born: José Antonio, Paloma, Corazón, Lucero, Dusko, Alma and Eduardo.

In July 2010, Eduardo Fajardo was named Favourite Son of the City Council of Meis (Pontevedra), and on this occasion he was honoured by the people of his hometown. On April 13, 2012, he inaugurated the Walk of Fame next to the Cervantes Theater. The city council of Almeria recognized his work and placed the first movie star.

25 years ago, when he lived in Mojácar, in a house that had several walls full of dishes, he admitted that his love of collecting dishes came from when he was very young. He stressed that in difficult times, his mother had to sell the dishes to get by, and that made Fajardo, already a film figure, decide to recover plates and plates. Undoubtedly, he showed that human side by remembering his mother, a key figure in the actor's life. He always spoke very well of Almeria, as he made a lot of films here in a few good years.

A good actor is gone, a person who one day 'fell in love' with this land and who until recently walked its streets in his wheelchair.
