Une des reines de la série B des années 60 dont la carrière a été bruquement interrompue. Un come-back raté: les temps avaient changé. Qu'est-elle devenue?

Le soleil des voyous, J. Delannoy, 1967.
Franco Prosperi, 1967.

Margaret Lee, 80 years old, legendary blonde English actress who worked so much in our cinema, from peplums to Franco and Ciccio movies, from light comedies to fabulous eurospy, and TV in the 60s, she was co-protagonist of the adventures of Dorellik alias Johnny Dorelli in "Johnny Sette", a sketch so popular that it led Steno to make a film about it, "Here comes Dorellik." Beautiful, very free, always at the center of scandals and spicy photos, she was launched by her press-agent and husband, Gino Malerba in the early 1960s as a double for Marilyn Monroe. It was even made up that she had worked in Hollywood when she had never been there.
And that's not all. On the day Marilyn died in 1962, somewhat absurd interviews of her appeared in the newspapers, "If I had been there all this might not have happened." A few years later she revealed that it was all the invention of her press-agent and husband, with whom she had her first son, Roberto Malerba, now a producer, in 1965. However, she soon divorced Gino Malerba, and even had problems for drug trafficking. We find her arrested in 1968 in Tangier with two kilos of marijuana. She will be punished with a fine of 100,000 pesetas.
At a certain point she disappeared, flew to London and became involved with Kim Brown, a 22-year-old musician who played with the Renegades, with whom he had his second son, Damian Anderson, also an important producer of international films, like his brother Roberto. By now at the center of small scandals of the cinema we find her in 1971 convicted of obscenity together with Klaus Kinski for the horror-erotic film "Paroxismus", then in 1973 chased naked by an angry crowd, who knows why, in Calcata on the set of "Un attimo, una vita" with Gabriele Tinti and Gianni Dei.
Her career in cinema was almost entirely concentrated in the crazy 1960s. The first film, already as a female protagonist in the midst of many male muscles, would be "Maciste contro i mostri" by Guido Malatesta, but also there was "Cleopatra" by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, which comes out two years later, where she has a small part. We immediately find her in the comic cinema of Franchi and Ingrassia, "2 samurai per 100 gheisce", "Adventures at the Motel", "The Crooks" by Lucio Fulci, "Wine, Whiskey and Salt Water", "The Maniacs", "The Martians have Twelve Fingers", "A Monster and a Half" by Steno, "The Two Public Dangers", "Two Jokers at the Moulin Rouge", "The Two Sergeants of General Custer".
Like other beauties of the time, Gloria Paul, Dominique Boschero, Hèlène Chanel, Margaret Lee had roles as a variety actress in our comic cinema. Due to a certain resemblance, she is stuck with the role of a blonde vapid à la Marilyn, which she does with a lot of fun. They may be superior films: "This Time We Talk About Men" by Lina Wertmuller, "I Kill, You Kill" by Gianni Puccini, "Casanova 70" by Mario Monicelli, "Tales in Two Squares" by Jean Delannoy. But when the films are directed by more prominent directors, her roles are drastically reduced. Where she really triumphed was in the Italian 007 or Eurospy.
We find her with the American Ken Clark in the remarkable "A077 from the East with Fury" by Sergio Grieco, in the beautiful "The Dynamite Scented Tiger" by Claude Chabrol with Roger Hanin, "Spies Against the World", "If All the Women of the World" by Henry Levin, shot in Brazil, "From Berlin the Apocalypse". She broke through in the major comedy, "These Ghosts" by Renato Castellani with Gassman and Sophia Loren, but in a small role. She was very appreciated in "Bandits in Milan" by Carlo Lizzani, where she had a role where she can really act. We will see her even better in dramatic films such as "The Bastards" by Duccio Tessari, "A doppia faccia" by Riccardo Freda, in the crazy "You know what Stalin did to women" by Maurizio Liverani, a sort of pamphlet dedicated to the follies of the communist directors of the time.
She teamed up with producer Henry Alan Towers for a series of horror-thrillers, "Throne of Fire" by Jesus Franco, "Paroxismus", "The 5 Golden Dragons" by Jeremy Summers with Christopher Lee. Her filmography is limited in the early 1980s, with a very trashy role, that of Lady Jane in "Sesso e volentieri" by Dino Risi, and that of Fanny Fonseca in "Neapolitan Sting" by Vittorio Caprioli. She then had a serious problem with justice and quit cinema entirely. She is always very close to her two children, who have made a long and important career in production and have protected her a lot. I was able to find her, to talk to her, to be able to interview her. Her life was divided between America, England and sometimes Italy.
