Diario de Almeria

As the Almeria historian Antonio Sevillano wrote in his day, the actor Mariano Leopardo de Anchóriz Fustel was born in the capital specifically in the Plaza del Marques de Heredia number 28 - popularly known as Plaza de los Burros - on September 22, 1929. Anchoriz, died young at the age of 58, on February 17, 1987 in Madrid, suffering from a heart problem and where he had been residing for many years with his wife María Callejón, without having any children. He was a film actor, painter, writer, musician, muralist and theatrical set designer. Within the world of cinema he was also a screenwriter and artistic director. Endowed with an extraordinary physique, he was an excellent swimmer, he worked as a presenter in TVE presenting in 1975 the contest "A simple sight" intervening in different series such as "Confidencias", "Tiempo y hora", "Novelas", "Cuentos y leyendas", "Ficciones", "Teatro de Siempre" and "Hora Once". He was defined as a person of great culture, multifaceted in any cultural activity and a lover of his land where he married in 1965 a young woman from Dalías.
His parents Román de Anchoriz Andres, of Aragonese origin and Josefina Fustel arrived in Almeria about the second decade of the last twentieth century. The father, a sailor by profession, practiced as a maritime pilot. They arrived with two more children, Carola and Roman.
Leopard Anchoriz, was as a child a restless and hyperactive lad, very intelligent, who in 1936 took his first steps in a popular school located on Calle de la Reina where he was prepared for his entry into high school. It happened as early as 1939. It was in the institute of Secondary Education-currently the School of Arts and Crafts- studying here the baccalaureate. He was a student of the extraordinary poet and teacher, Celia Viñas, sharing a course with other almeria known as Gabriel Espinar, Mary Moltó, López Cuadra or the painter Dionisio Godoy among others. Extraordinary draughtsman, he was going for painter, taking care of the assembly of the scenographys of the steps, comedies, the works that Celia made to his students of the Institute. Interestingly, she illustrated some of her teacher's posts, including "Wheat of the Heart" or "Silly Song of the South."
At the end of high school he went to Madrid to study Fine Arts at the Academy of San Fernando, arriving at the cinema with the director Pedro Lazaga through his friendship with the actress Conchita Montes. He was a close friend of José María Forque, Armiñan and the Italian Enzo G.Castellary with whom he worked in several films and even went to live with him and his family in Rome.
According to the Almeria historian Antonio Sevillano, Leo Anchoriz did not abandon the painting in which he had pointed out magnificent qualities, elaborating for the Madrid theaters various decorations and, especially, a collection of posters of the Feria de Almería, with which he won the first prize in the municipal call of 1948 - in collaboration with the virgilist Miguel Salmerón Pellón- , 1949, 1951 and 1972, being after Pérez Siquier, Salmerón and Robles Cabrera, the most awarded posterist. He was also the author of the mural announcing the Fiestas de San Isidro in Madrid-1973.
With 36 years of age and consolidated his film career, on the afternoon of Sunday, January 12, 1965 Leo Anchóriz married in the church of San Antonio de Ciudad Jardín with María Callejón MacDonald nine years younger The bride born in London was great-granddaughter of Ventura Callejón Bosomba, a singular daliense character: liberal military , diplomat, consul, parralero, uvero exporter and owner of a splendid manor house in Dalías, in which the girl spent long periods. In Ciudad Jardín lived his sister Carola and his brother-in-law Pedro, while his other brother, Román, had already married a daughter of the Francoist general Andrés Saliquet Zumeta. Given the popularity of the bride and groom, the wedding was a citizen attraction in that decade, attended by authorities, celebrities, friends of both and families. To the church of Ciudad Jardín came among others the matador of bulls Antonio Bienvenida, the film producer José María Forqué, the writer Jaime Luis de Armiñán, who together with the mayor of the city, Antonio Cuesta Moyano and the general Luis de Bardaxi military governor of Almeria, signed the marriage certificate. The celebration and banquet were at the Sea Club, leaving the couple traveling to France and England.
As a protagonist or supporting actor, Leo Anchoriz participated in 37 films of varied subject matter, predominating spaghetti westerns, with "hard" or action roles. She debuted in 1957 with a small role in "Las muchachas de azul", directed by José Mª Forqué played by Analía Gadé, Fernando Fernán Gómez and Tony Leblanc which was followed that same year by "El tigre de Chamberí" by director Pedro Luis Ramírez along with the prematurely deceased José Luis Ozores and Tony Leblac. In 1959 he appeared in "Duelo en La Cañada" - his first film shot in Almería under the direction of Manuel Mur Oti, alongside Mary Esquivel, Javier Armet and Mara Cruz. Three years later he filmed in 1962 "Milagro a los cobardes", also by Mur Oti with Ruth Román and Javier Escrivá with which he won the award for Breakthrough Actor at the San Sebastián International Festival. That same year, before changing his acting record he was present in the films "El gladiador invincible", "Marcha o muere" and "El balcón de la luna" in the role of Rafael alongside the legendary folkloric figures, Carmen Sevilla, Lola Flores and Paquita Rico.
In Almeria he made nine films. Several of them together with the almeria of adoption, the great actor Eduardo Fajardo. The first in 1959 "Duel in the Glen", which was followed by "Marcha o muere" in 1962, "El dedo en el trigger" in 1965, "Siete pistolas para los MacGregors" in 1966, "Llego, veo y tiro" in 1968 "Mátalos y vuelve", that same year, "Los desesperados" in 1969, "¡Qué nos importa la revolución!" in 1972 and "Los locos del oro negro" in 1975 , his last feature film in which he played the role of the sheriff of the village.
In a second stage, as co-writer and author he shot five other films. "Vivir al sol" in 1965 by Germán Lorente, "Carola de día, Carola de noche" in 1969 by Jaime de Armiñan and interpreted by Marisol, in 1970 "La Lola, dicen que no vive sola" directed by Jaime de Armiñan, "Los fríos ojos del miedo" in 1971 directed by Enzo G. Castellary, "A veces ocurren cosas" in 1975 an episode of TVE and "La petición" of 1976 at the orders of Pilar Miró.
As artistic director he appeared in "La cera virgen" of 1972 directed by José María Forqué and interpreted by Carmen Sevilla and José Luis López Vázquez and in 1974 he did it again in the film of Forqué "No es nada, mamá, sólo un juego" interpreted by Alida Valli, Paco Rabal and Simón Andreu.
Even though he does not appear in the credits, he collaborated with his friend Pilar Miró in the filming of "Gary Cooper que estás en los cielos" and was set designer of musical comedies, such as "La princesa alegre", a funny operetta starring the actress Marujita Díaz and performed at the Cervantes theater in Almería in March 1960.
