Mel Gaines was an American actor born in San Gabriel, California in 1933. A graduate of the Pasadena Playhouse, his acting career began in the mid-1950s with an appearance as Blackie in the adult western ‘Flesh and the Spur’ (1956). He then appeared in several TV series including Death Valley Days in (1958 and 1959), Cimarron City (1959), Hawaiian Eye (1960) and Gunsmoke (1966).

Mel then travelled to Italy to try his luck and he appeared in several Spaghetti westerns: The Stranger Who Made the Sign of the Cross and Ace High both in (1968) and They Call Me Trinity (1970). He then returned to the US and was a voice actor on the Japanese TV series Spectreman (TV Series) from (1971-1978) doing the voices of several characters. The English dubbing of the series was done in Los Angeles per information supplied by actor Rodd Dana who was also a voice in the series under the direction of Mel Welles.

Gaines career was now heavily involved in voice dubbing and he bounced back and forth between Italy, working for ELDA, and the US during most of the decade of the 1980s. He married and Italian woman named Tilde in 1984 but the marriage was short lived.

In 1986 Gaines was diagnosed with throat cancer. He had an operation in 1987 at the City of Hope in Los Angeles but the doctors removed the wrong side of his throat which left him still with cancer but now unable to speak having to use an artificial voice box to communicate. He returned to Italy and was operated on at the European Hospital in Rome but the disease had spread and the operation did nothing for him. Mel died in Rome, Italy in 1988.

Effectivement on retrouve bien Mel Gaines dans "Flesh and the spur " (Blakie) et dans "Man or gun"  (Diego) mais pas de trace pour "Return of Sabata", comme signalé par Guy Callaway.
Il apparait aussi dans des séries telles que : Gunsmoke, Les aventuriers du Far-West, Cimarron City.
