STAGE, FILM AND TV ACTOR CAMERON MITCHELL DIES
Cameron Mitchell, 75, a rugged actor best known for his role on television's "The High Chaparral" and for the movie "Death of a Salesman," died of lung cancer July 5 at his home in Pacific Palisades.
During a four-decade career, he appeared in more than 90 films and was a guest on many television shows. Mr. Mitchell played tough, hard-drinking Buck Cannon on NBC's "The High Chaparral" from 1967 to 1971. He also played Jeremiah Worth, the castaway friend of the family in the adventure series "The Swiss Family Robinson," which appeared on ABC in the mid-1970s.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Pennsylvania, the son of a minister. He decided on acting as a career, to the dismay of his family.
"All the men in our family, as far back as I can remember, were ministers," he was quoted as saying in an NBC biography. "We had a corner on the market. It just figured that I would follow along."
He went to New York, where he was a Radio City page before landing stage work in the 1939 production of "The Taming of the Shrew" with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne.
After World War II military service, Mr. Mitchell moved to Los Angeles and signed with MGM. He appeared in films ranging from comedies to Westerns.
In the late 1940s, he also played Happy, one of Willie Loman's sons, in the Broadway production of Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman" and reprised the role in the 1952 film. His other film credits included "They Were Expendable," "How to Marry a Millionaire," "Monster of the Wax Museum" and "My Favorite Year."
In the 1960s, he worked mainly overseas, appearing as Julius Caesar and other historical figures in foreign films.
Survivors include his wife, six children and five grandchildren.
