Spanish actress Margarita Lozano, who worked with top European directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Sergio Leone, died Monday aged 90, local officials said.

The southeastern city of Lorca, where Lozano spent her childhood, declared three days of mourning, referring to her as an "adoptive daughter."

"Margarita Lozano left a deep mark on both the cinema and theatre and acted under the orders of the best directors of the time," Lorca mayor Diego Jose Mateos said in a statement.

Born in 1931 in Tetuan in northern Morocco which was then a Spanish protectorate to a father who was a soldier stationed there, Lozano initially studied design and fashion.

But she abandoned her studies to pursue acting, her true passion, in Madrid, initially in the theatre.

She starred in acclaimed Spanish director Luis Bunuel's 1961 drama "Viridiana" about a young nun about to take her final vows.

The movie won the top Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

In the late 1960s she went to Italy, appearing in Pasolini's 1969 drama "Pigsty" as well as Sergio Leone's 1964 western "A Fistful of Dollars" alongside Clint Eastwood.

She retired for a decade to raise her family but returned to Italian cinema in the 80s, appearing in several films by Paolo Taviani and his brother Vittorio Taviani.

Her friend, Spanish architect Simon Angel Ros who designed her home in the coastal town of Puntas de Calnegre near Lorca where she was living, said Lozano passed away "peaceful".

"Her heart has been weakening slowly, she did not suffer," he told local media.

Elle avait tourné avec Luis Buñuel, Sergio Leone, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Claude Berri, Nanni Moretti ou encore les frères Taviani. Margarita Lozano s'est éteinte, lundi 7 février, à l'âge de 90 ans, ont annoncé les autorités locales. « La mairie de Lorca décrète trois jours de deuil après la disparition de l'actrice et fille adoptive de la ville, Margarita Lozano », a tweeté cette municipalité espagnole située dans le sud-est du pays, où l'actrice a grandi.

Née en 1931 à Tétouan au Maroc, alors sous protectorat espagnol, d'un père soldat qui y était en poste, Margarita Lozano a commencé par faire des études dans la mode avant de les délaisser pour suivre sa passion et devenir actrice. Elle a fait ses débuts au théâtre à Madrid.


Elle a notamment joué dans Viridiana, drame du réalisateur espagnol Luis Buñuel, qui a obtenu la Palme d'or au festival de Cannes en 1961. Très appréciée des réalisateurs italiens, elle tourne avec Pier Paolo Pasolini dans Porcherie (1969), et avec Sergio Leone dans le western Pour une poignée de dollars (1964) avec Clint Eastwood.

Elle se retire ensuite de la scène et des écrans pour se consacrer à sa famille, mais revient au cinéma italien dans les années 1980 dans plusieurs films des frères Taviani ou dans La messe est finie de Nanni Moretti. Son ami, l'architecte espagnol Simon Angel Ros, a expliqué qu'elle était partie « en paix » : « Son cœur s'est lentement affaibli, elle n'a pas souffert », a-t-il indiqué aux médias locaux.
